the arrangement would have been entirely satisfactory, but there were evidently difficulties in the way of this as no such offer was made and we were left with the prospect of the Colony supporting the two houses and receiving recognition only for supporting one.
In these circumstances, as soon as we discovered that the agreement which had been made entitled Major Atkinson and myself to ask for rather more adequate recognition, I did intervene to suggest that it would be reasonable for us to ask that the Extension should be on a rather larger scale, with the result that this particular proposal fell through.
I gather that General Henderson now considers that I was greatly to blame for this, I venture to think that what Major Atkinson and myself did then will not be regarded as blameworthy by those whose interests we were trying to serve and
I shall be well content to await their verdict upon the whole matter.
